” After arduous review of the players in this space, testing keyboards, screens, and watching pricing (and comparing pricing with generic netbooks I can get from China) I settled on the Samsung N110.
This unit was drop shipped by J&H, their fulfillment of the order was ok, just average. Came in about 5 days after ordering.
I bought this units since I travel alot on 8 to 10 hours portal to portal trips, and wanted something that I could work on the plane, maybe play an odd movie, and possibly some videos.
When I got it I deleted some of the non-neccesary files, and dropped in Openoffice, Skype, the usual suspects. I did not buy the extra memory.
The Highs:
1. The form factor is just as advertised. Love it. The keyboard is a little small for working all day on it (more later about that), but very adequate, and the key layout is rational and adequate.
2. Screen is very nice. I really like it. Very crisp and bright.
3. For a 6 cell battery unit, I find the weight is very light.
4. Wifi. Hooking it up took 1 minute, and it has been very good, once set up on a network, it will find the network with no problem. This is important to me as I have two offices, and rotate back and forth.
The issues
1. This is billed as a 9.5 hour battery life. That simply is just not true, the realistic battery life, running wifi and BT, is about 6.5 to 7 hours. I was a little disappointed at this, but I was probably not realistic in my expectations, the 9.5 hours would be with wifi and BT turned off, screen dimmed, etc.
2. A little slow at times.
Having said all that, I have been fighting with my primary laptop, an HP slug with Vista that just loves to freeze and crash. So after the last crash last week, I put all the files on my external hard drive and started using this baby as my primary laptop. To be honest it has worked better, with fewer crashes and system issues (XP vs Vista??), although it will struggle a bit with alot of stuff going on. Just paired it with 20 inch monitors and a separate keyboard in my office, and it has been fine.
I am going to upgrade the memory, and see if that speeds things up, but frankly for my company’s use, I am going to put the guys who travel on this, I can buy 3 of these a year vs. one of the other laptops they were going through each year.
